Is Tobin Counseling accepting new clients?
Yes! Please reach out and share your availability if you're interested in working with me. Getting started is simple and I'd be honored to have the opportunity to work with you.
How often will we meet?
Sessions are 50 minutes long and I meet with clients on a weekly basis – especially as we begin working together.
What will the first session be like?
The goal of the first session is to get to know each other. Research tells us that up to 80% of your success in counseling is due to the relationship you develop with your therapist – regardless of theoretical orientation. This being the case, it is important to prioritize finding a counselor you feel you work well with. We'll cover how the process works, discuss any questions you may have, and explore what brings you to counseling.
Are you queer and/or trans friendly?
Absolutely! I work with clients of a wide variety of genders and sexualities. You may have a label that fits you well, you may reject labels altogether, or maybe your label hasn't been invented yet. Wherever you happen to land on the spectrums of gender and sexuality, you belong and are accepted as you are. My goal is to help you be the healthiest version of you! I am currently pursuing membership with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and have experience writing referral letters for hormone therapy and surgery.
Is my information kept confidential?
The privacy and confidentiality of my clients is of utmost importance. The information you share in counseling will be kept confidential aside from your giving me written permission and consent to share as needed. There are a few exceptions wherein confidentiality cannot be granted and we will cover these in detail during your first session.
What can I expect to pay?
I base my rates on a sliding fee scale to accomodate the financial needs of my clients. Payment is due at the time of your session and I accept cash, credit card, HSA card, or check. I am considered an out-of-network provider with insurance plans. To learn if you qualify for out-of-network benefits, contact your insurance provider. Depending on your plan, you may qualify for full or partial reimbursement. If you qualify, I will provide you with a monthly statement (called a superbill) which you can then submit to your insurance provider.
Do you offer video counseling?
My license allows me to provide video counseling services to individuals in the state of Michigan via secure and HIPAA-compliant software. There are pros and cons to this type of counseling which I will cover in detail should you be interested. My preference is to do in-person counseling and thus far in my career, have found this to be most effective in helping clients reach their goals. However, I offer these services to clients who may have different abilities or who are in need of special accommodations.
Do you offer referrals?
My goal is to help you find the right fit in a counselor. I would be honored if that counselor was me, but in the case that I do not have the particular training or expertise to assist you, I will gladly provide you with alternative referrals. I am well-networked with a variety of providers in the Grand Rapids community including other counselors, psychiatrists, chiropractic, and body-based care.
Will you consult with my organization or speak at my event?
Supporting the health and wellness of the Grand Rapids community is important to me. I welcome the opportunity to consult with your organization or to present at your upcoming event. I am an experienced team building facilitator and particularly enjoy working with youth and young adults. Topics of interest include LGBTQIA+ issues and training, social media networking, and innovating team processes. You can check out some of my writing on the My Kid Is Gay website.
